To start off with, the XC40 and UX are very similarly priced. The UX has a small advantage there, but we’ll get more into that in a bit. Power output is much more similar; a difference of two horsepower isn’t something you’ll feel. However, what you will feel is how much better the delivery of that power is when it’s sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission. CVT transmissions are notorious for their numb feeling, and that’s part of why Volvo doesn’t use them. Another reason is towing, which CVTs can’t handle much of, if at all, giving the UX its complete lack of a towing rating, but the XC40 leads the segment in towing capacity. And while you can choose to have either of these vehicles with all-wheel drive, only the XC40 also offers a more powerful engine as an option.

As we noted before, the UX has a slight price advantage over the XC40, but one glance at what comes standard on the XC40 and things start to look different. For example, heated seats come standard on the XC40, but require a trim level upgrade on the UX, and that pushes the price of the UX up above the price of the XC40, just for that one extremely popular feature. But then you throw in other standard features on the XC40, like ambient interior lighting and integrated navigation, and it becomes even clearer that the lower price on the UX doesn’t actually make it a better deal. And since this is Volvo, we have to mention a couple of safety features: rain-sensing wipers and a rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking- that are also standard on just the XC40.

Winner - Volvo XC40

While the UX has its appeal, it just can’t stand up to the versatility, equipment, and robust drivetrain options of the Volvo XC40. While the XC40 might be small, it offers outsized capability and style, becoming the class leader by doing everything that extra bit better than the competition. Let Germain Volvo Cars North Hills help you find the XC40 that’s right for you.
