Volvo XC90 Reliability & Safety Ratings

Volvo XC90 Reliability & Safety Ratings
The XC90 is the standard against which all other family vehicles are judged. It’s extremely versatile, comfortable, and it even looks great. But there are some other practical considerations that people have for family vehicles, things that aren’t necessarily obvious in a simple test drive. To give you a more in-depth look at things like reliability and safety, we’ve put together this guide.

Volvo XC90 Reliability

There’s a very important fact that Volvo is able to point to on the subject of reliability, and that is that the car that holds the Guinness World Record for the highest mileage car ever belongs to a Volvo car. The vehicle’s last known mileage was 3.25 million miles, and the owner attributed it to nothing more than gentle driving and a strict adherence to the maintenance schedule. Obviously, most people don’t hold on to vehicles long enough to get anywhere near there, but the fact remains that Volvo engineering allows for record-breaking reliability, if you’re so inclined. On average, the XC90 will make it past 200,000 miles if you follow the advice of the record holder and stick to the maintenance schedule.

Volvo XC90 Warranty Coverage

There’s no substitute for the peace of mind you get from a good warranty. That’s why Volvo’s warranty coverage is one more thing that adds to the appeal of the XC90. The XC90 comes with a New Vehicle Limited Warranty period of four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For those who opt for the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, there is also an 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the high-voltage battery. And to help you keep your XC90 in good working order, Volvo also throws in the first two years or 20,000 miles of routine maintenance free of charge with the purchase price.

Volvo XC90 Safety Rating

There are two major ratings to consider when trying to determine if a given vehicle is safe: NHTSA crash test ratings and the IIHS Top Safety Pick award. It’s important to consider both because the IIHS awards points for more than just crashworthiness; it also factors in any features that help to prevent a crash, and how well those features work. But obviously, you also need to consider how the vehicle holds up in the event, however unlikely, of a crash. Fortunately, the XC90 excels in both areas, earning both a 5-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. That isn’t just for this year either; the XC90 has earned both every year for the last decade, the entire lifespan of the current generation. And it’s that kind of consistency that has earned Volvo the reputation it has for safety.

Volvo XC90 Driver Support

Standing up to an accident is an extremely important quality for a vehicle to have, but it will always be even safer to avoid the accident in the first place. That’s why Volvo places such an emphasis on driver support systems, systems that can detect and react faster than is humanly possible, or systems that make it easier for the driver to react. Volvo loads up the XC90 with a ton of these features as standard, and there are a handful of optional features as well, for that extra bit of assistance. Here are all of the driver support features that are either standard or available for the XC90:
