2026 Volvo XC40 vs. Audi Q3 Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos

When you’re looking for a safe and versatile compact luxury SUV, the Volvo XC40 is likely to be one of the first you consider. But this is a competitive segment, and the XC40 has a number of competitors. One of the most successful of these is the Audi Q3, the second-best-selling model from the German automaker. With standard features like adaptive cruise control and all-wheel drive, the Q3 is certainly appealing, but how does it compare to the XC40? Let’s take a closer look and see.

For this comparison, we’re looking at the base trims of each vehicle. The only option we’ve selected is all-wheel drive for the XC40, since it’s standard on the Q3, and we want to point out that the XC40 still has a price advantage even with this option selected. Both vehicles come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, so there’s no real difference in performance. But there are differences between the two drivetrains. The first of these is the mild hybrid system that comes with the XC40 and gives it a fuel economy advantage. And then there’s the much more dramatic difference in towing capacity. The Q3 has a towing capacity that is on the low end of normal for this segment, but the XC40 is the segment leader, with more than double the capacity of the Audi.

Interior space gives the XC40 another advantage. While the legroom for the back seats is identical, the XC40 offers more front legroom and quite a bit more cargo space. Despite this, the XC40 is also more maneuverable, boasting a tighter turning radius than the Q3. While the Q3 does come with lane-keeping assist, power mirrors, and a power liftgate, the XC40 improves on all of these with active lane-keeping assist, power mirrors with driver’s-side tilt down, and a hands-free power liftgate. Each of these makes the XC40 that extra bit more enjoyable to live with.
