XC60 VS Cadillac XT5 - Germain Volvo Cars North Hills

The Volvo XC60 is a mainstay of its segment, maintaining its popularity by offering an impressive list of standard equipment, stylish bodywork, and a serenely comfortable interior. But it is a popular segment, so the XC60 is not without its competitors. One of the more popular of these competitors is the Cadillac XT5, which attracts buyers with an appealing starting price. But is the XT5 really a match for the XC60? Let’s take a look.

To make this comparison as straightforward as possible, we’re using the base trim of each vehicle. The only option we’ve opted for is all-wheel drive on the XT5, since the XC60 comes with standard AWD. Pricing is very close, but it is immediately noticeable that the XC60 has more power as well as better fuel economy. Having an advantage in both areas simultaneously is a clear sign of a highly advanced drivetrain, and in the case of the XC60, it also includes a mild hybrid system. Handling is better in the XC60, too, thanks in part to a sophisticated double wishbone front suspension that provides better control than the space/cost-saving strut setup in the XT5. On top of that, standard torque vectoring gives the XC60 a traction advantage in poor weather or performance driving conditions.

The XC60 has an unusually high towing capacity for the segment, which is all the more obvious when compared to the XT5, which has an unusually low towing capacity. If you decide instead to carry cargo inside the vehicle, the XC60 comes with a standard hands-free liftgate, something you’d have pay extra for on the XT5. And since this is Volvo, safety features like a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, and a rear cross-traffic alert are all standard, but none of these features are included as standard on the XT5. In all, you would need to move up a trim on the XT5 in order to match the level of equipment on the XC60, a move that makes the Cadillac significantly more expensive without addressing the lack of power, poor fuel economy, or lackluster handling.
